Ben Johnson had the priviledge of traveling with The Weatherfords for a few weeks this summer. Below is his story of his experience which was such a great opportunity:
I had a great trip with the Weatherfords, starting from Paoli, Oklahoma and heading to Shipshewana, IN., where were had a great time seeing the Indy 500. We sang 6 nights at the Blue Gate Restaurant and Theatre. Here I got to meet some fine entertainers in Gospel music, such as Henry and Hazel Slaughter and Geraldeen and Ricky, and the Forgiven Trio. I saw lots of horses and buggies, and it is an area rich in Mennonite and Amish culture. We sang our way across the states and into Canada, where I had the opportunity to see Niagara Falls with Steve. It was wonderful that he took the time to take me to some special places that I'd never been to before. We were in New York for a week singing and seeing friends from the Stamps -Baxter School of Music, as well as meeting friends of the Weatherfords. Then off to Washington DC, where we saw most of the Smithsonians, including the Air and Space museum, the History museums and several monuments and memorials. I was disappointed when we could not see the Declaration of Independence, because the exhibit was closed at that time. But, I had a wonderful time time trying to keep up with Steve as we saw many of the sights. After singing in Alexandria, VA., we started our long trek back to OK.
Musically, I learned better ways to sing the music that the Lord as gifted me with. I learned that sometimes living on the road can be difficult, unless you have a strong will to do this work. I also grew spiritually, by watching Lily Fern as she ministered and prayed for people. The Weatherfords really do love people, and I could see that through their everyday actions.
I had a very fun and educational trip while traveling with The Weatherfords! ~ Ben Johnson, JFQ
